What to Expect at a Hearing Test

Now that you’ve decided to take the first step toward bettering your hearing health, your consultation with our team at Digital Hearing Lab comes next!

Hearing tests are painless and non-invasive. A hearing test determines your brain’s ability to receive sound. It also elucidates what type of hearing loss you experience.

Consultation

When you meet us for your hearing test, you will answer a series of questions about your medical and family history. We will ask if you are currently on any medication, have recently had a cold or ear infection, and were recently exposed to high noise volumes. We’ll also ask for information about your job, daily life, and activities. Remember that the more you can share with us, the more information we will have to assist you in addressing your hearing needs!

Physical Examination

Following this chat, your hearing specialist will examine your ears with an otoscope, an instrument that allows them to look inside your ear canal toward your eardrum. This step helps us determine if there are any injuries to your eardrum, as well as any blockage within your ear canal (such as earwax). After this examination, we will ask you to remove your hearing aids and glasses for the subsequent portions of the hearing test.

You will be asked to sit in a soundproof room or lab while we remain in an adjacent space operating the controls. The following hearing tests may be administered, testing one ear at a time:

Reviewing Your Results

Following these tests, your results will be recorded on an audiogram, a visualization of your hearing abilities (shown individually by ear). Your hearing ability in terms of frequency, loudness, and brain response will be graphed, while speech recognition is generally recorded as a percentage.

Our team will explain your results and the next course of action. These results are divided into normal hearing and varying degrees of hearing loss. We will assist you in determining the next steps to treat your hearing best.
